Parks and Wildlife

There are few places in Australia where you can stand in the main street of town and experience wild bird-life or see a wild platypus. But Deniliquin is one of them!

The beautiful Edward River, which winds its way through town provides the perfect oasis for bird and wildlife.

And situated on the edge of some of the flattest plains on earth, Deniliquin is also on the doorstep of some of the largest red gum forests in the southern hemisphere, made up of Gulpa Island Precinct, Millewa Precinct, Moira Precinct and Barooga Precinct, which you can view on the Deniliquin National Parks Map.

But you don’t have to even leave town to get back to nature. Opposite the main shopping area is the shady Waring Park, while on the opposite side of the shops is a lagoon of the Edward River, preserved in its natural condition. A footbridge leads from the footpath across the lagoon into an area of River Red Gum bushland where you can stumble upon Red and Grey Kangaroos.

Close by is the natural bushland Island Sanctuary, home to over 100 species of birds. Waterbirds are common and many live and breed here when the conditions are right. During flood times hundreds of Nankeen Night Herons and Intermediate Egrets nest here.

Deniliquin is regarded by some as one of Australia’s best birding areas, so to ensure you experience it all, a local bird guide can be arranged by contacting the Visitor Information Centre.

Or to explore the natural beauty of the region at your own pace you can take one, or all, of the self-guided tours listed below.
